Are Consoles Really Dying?

Well….are they?

It definitely won’t die, but there MIGHT (keyword MIGHT) be some sort of change in the entire mentality.
Over the past few years, there has been talk about consoles that don’t use disks and will be completely digital download. Personally, I don’t believe this, and a console that doesn’t support used games will be a console that I will not support. But this theory is still there and isn’t completely unlikely a few generations down the road.

There is also thought of handhelds dying with the advent of smartphones and tablets, and this has spread to console gaming, too. People say “Oh look, GTA 3 on my phone for $5. Great!” Although this is more than likely not going to happen because Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo make a good deal of money on First-party titles and hardware, it is still a possibility.

And lastly, there is the issue of the retail industry dwindling down. Video game sales have been down for a while and I’m almost positive they’ll be back up with the new generation. However, if this is not the case, we will see a crash in the industry just like we did in 1983. Although they’d be happening for different reasons, it’s still a decent comparison. Are consoles becoming a thing of the past?

All in all, I can almost guarantee you that this won’t happen, and that console gaming is going to be strong for decades. 🙂
